As a writer, it’s important to address the topic of banning books in America. In denying the truth of this countries entire history is a malicious and abusive form of suppression. The abuse of power and infringement on free speech is now a plague on society. The culprit is denialism, fear, and self hate by one segment of America. They offer empty thoughts and prayers for the casualties of mass shootings, but they dare not infringe on the right to bear arms. They fear knowledge and awareness because this will ultimately destroy them. Let’s use these attributes to ban the people who are banning books.
The Death of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States comes as no surprise, but with great disappointment. After all this is supposed to be the land of liberty, freedom, justice for all and of course a democracy, yes? Clearly the decision to overturn the 1973 ruling for women to have bodily autonomy doesn’t apply to the good ole standards of the U S of A.
This SCOTUS decision is indicative of politicians and religious zealots believing they know what’s best for women. What’s next the right for women not to vote? If we, the people, continue to allow this type of blatant disregard for human rights, I fear America will end up a theocracy. I’m saddened by the hate and disdain for equality in this country. It’s time for the old white guard, their allies and supporters to hold themselves accountable for their hypocrisy and resign their misogynistic mentality and grandiose ideology of supremacy. This country deserves better leaders, more compassion and mutual human respect for beliefs, diversity, and more importantly, the right to bodily autonomy. – TJ Wolfe
